As mentioned above, Nvidia RTX 3080 and AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT are among the best graphic cards available on the market right now.
Although the RTX 3090 and Radeon RX 6900 XT are the best graphic cards available in the market right now, the 6800 XT and 3080 provide better value for money, and they can also run all modern games on the highest settings.
These are the 2nd best graphic cards available from both companies and are the better value for money compared to the highest end cards just mentioned above.
RX 6800 XT Vs RTX 3080: Specifications & Architecture
In this section, let us have a look at the specifications of both cards in detail.
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT
The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is based on the AMD RDNA 2 architecture, which is the latest and most advanced architecture from the company. It is based on Navi 21 processor, which uses a 7 nm process.
It has 72 powerful enhanced Compute Units and 128 MB AMD Infinity Cache. The number of Stream Processing Cores is 4608, which will ensure a smooth experience even in modern titles.
The card also features 288 TMUS and 128 ROPS. The bus interface is the latest PCIe 4.0 x16 standard.
The 6800 XT also features 72 ray-tracing cores, but the ray tracing performance is not as good as its Nvidia counterpart. The performance and benchmarks of both cards will be discussed in the upcoming section of this article.
The AMD GPU under discussion has 32 KB per WGP of level 0 cache, 128 KB per Array of level 1 cache, 4 MB level 2 cache, and 128 MB level 3 cache.
Let’s talk about the clock speeds of the card under discussion now. The 6800 Xt has a base clock of 1825 MHz which can be boosted up to 2250 MHz under extreme loads.
It also has a game clock frequency of 2015 MHz. This is the frequency the GPU will run on most of the time during gaming.
The GPU comes with 16GB memory with a memory clock speed of 2000 MHz. The memory type is GDDR6, and the memory bus is 256-bit which is very good.
The card supports Direct X12, OpenGL 4.6, OpenCL 2.1, Vulkan 1.2, and Shader Model 6.5. All of these specifications are at their latest standards.
The 6800 XT is a dual-slot design card which means that it will take up the space of two slots in your motherboard.
The length of the card is 267 mm or 10.5 inches, the width is 120 mm or 4.7 inches, and the height is 50 mm or 2 inches. So make sure that your PC case has enough space to fit a card this size.
The recommended power supply for the card is 750 watts as the TDP of the card is 300W. 300W TDP is very good considering the performance of the card as it is much lower than the Nvidia counterpart. It requires a 2×8 pin power connector to work.
The metallic backplate of the card is sleek and sturdy, and the rear I/O includes 1x HDMI port, 2x Display Ports (DP), and 1x USB-C port.
The ports are good enough for a general PC user and a professional as well. The USB-C port can be used to connect a VR headset or even a monitor.
This port also supports 27W fast charging, which is a good add-on to have as a lot of phones nowadays support 25-watt charging or above.
The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT fan setup is nothing like any of AMD’s previous in-house designs. The awful blower fan has been replaced by a triple fan design that spreads across a large, matte black heat sink. The two-town shroud is also well built.
Along with 3 fans, the AMD card has plenty of metal fins to dissipate heat and a more complex aluminum shroud for better heat management. The card will barely touch 75 degrees Celcius under heavy gaming.
Moreover, the fans are surprisingly quiet while maintaining this level of temperature. As there is no ventilation at the rear of the card, all of the heat will be dissipated into your case, so plan your build accordingly.
When it comes to noise, the AMD’s card runs surprisingly quiet under load, which shows how far AMD has come with its in-house design. You won’t have any noise complaints while using this card.
Smart Access Memory uses more PCIe bandwidth, so the GPU’s video memory can be accessed more efficiently by new Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 series processors.
This feature can potentially lead to slightly improved gaming performance from 1 to 6%.
The 6800 XT also comes with the new Rage Mode. Rage Mode is basically a one-click overclocking feature that increases the power and fan speed limit and achieves higher core clock speeds to boost performance.
Moreover, the power efficiency of the card has also been improved a lot. AMD claims a 54% increase in performance per watt between RDNA and RDNA 2.
In different games, the RDNA 2 is actually more efficient than Nvidia’s Ampere architecture on which the 3080 is based.
This shows that the 6800 is much more power-efficient than its predecessors, which speaks of the quality of the engineering AMD has put into this GPU.
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT also comes with a feature called infinity cache, which according to AMD, system will provide 2.17 times more bandwidth than you would expect from a standard 256-bit interface.
This boosted bandwidth will result in higher clock frequency, and greater compute unit count while keeping power consumption under control.

Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080
The RTX 3080 features Nvidia’s Ampere architecture which is based on the 8 nm process. It has the 3rd generation of Tensor Cores.
The 3rd generation of Tensor Cores was introduced in the RTX 3000 series, and the RTX 3080 is a part of that series.
On the ray tracing side, it has the 2nd generation of RT cores which are much better in performance than the 1st generation cores.
The 3080 has a base clock speed of 1440 compared to the 1825 MHz of the AMD card under discussion.
The boost clock is 1710 MHz compared to 2250 MHz of the AMD card. But the higher clock speeds on the AMD card do not mean that it will significantly outperform its Nvidia counterpart.
The memory on the RTX 3080 is 10GB which seems insufficient according to 2022 standards. The AMD, on the other hand, offers 16 GB of memory, as mentioned above. The memory type on this card is also GDDR6X.
The memory bus is 320-bit, and the memory bandwidth is 760 GB/s compared to the 256-bit and 512 GB/s of AMD counterpart.
It comes with 8704 CUDA cores for excellent performance in games. Being an Nvidia card, it also supports Geforce Experience software which lets you control different aspects of your card and games.
G-Sync will make sure that you get an amazing gaming experience without any tearing, stuttering, flicker, or artifacts.
It also ensures the minimum input lag so that you can enjoy competitive gaming to its fullest. To take advantage of G-Sync technology, you also have to get a G-Sync monitor separately.
The RTX 3080 comes with 1 HDMI port and 3x Display ports port to attach multiple monitors at once. Its TDP is 320 Watts, and the minimum recommended power supply is 750 watts.
It uses a 1x 12 pin power connector which can be used in 1x 8 pin and 1x 4 pin combinations.
The Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 comes with OpenGL 4.6, OpenCL 3.0, Vulkan 1.2, CUDA version 8.6, and shader model 6.6. DirectX 12 is also supported, of course.
AS mentioned above, this Geforce GPU has 8704 CUDA cores, 272 Tensor cores, and 68 rat tracing cores. It has fewer ray-tracing cores than the AMD GPU under discussion, but ray tracing performance is much better. The L2 cache is 5 MB on this GPU.

No matter what are the specifications on paper, performance is a must thing to consider before purchasing one of these cards.
To judge the performance of these cards, let us have a look at multiple games and how they run on both of these cards.

Let’s dig into actual performance, starting with Borderlands 3, the Unreal Engine 4 powered first-person shooter. Although the margins are thin, 3080 is beaten by 6800 XT at 4K settings. It performed 2.5% better than the 3080 on average, but it is still a win.
At 1440p settings in the same game, the 6800’s performance advantage increases to 11%.
The next game under consideration is Control. Which is among the best games to test the performance of new cards. In this game at 4K settings, the 3080 delivers around 23% performance uplift over the AMD’s card, which is a remarkable state of affairs.
The performance margin reduces to 17% at 1440p settings.
When DLSS is turned on, it takes AMD out of the fight completely as the performance margin increases to 100%. I have already explained above about DLSS and how it can magically change the performance of the games through AI.
This next-gen GPU face-off is someone problematic in traditional fashion when Nvidia has DLSS technology as it completely changes how games perform.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Let’s have the look at the Shadow of the Tomb Raider now. Starting with the 4K, Shadow of the Tomb Raider shows the 3080 clearly ahead of the 6800 XT by around 7.5%. Interestingly, on 1440p, 6800 XT is on par with Nvidia’s GPU.
So it means if we factor out Nvidia’s DLSS technology, 6800 XT gives a tough competition to its Nvidia counterpart.
Doom Eternal is the next game to test in benchmarks. Doom Eternal gives around 165 fps at 4K settings on Nvidia and 150 fps on average on AMD, which is around 7 point lead for Nvidia. At 1440p, the team green still beats team red but this time with a 5% lead.
Next up, let’s talk about Death Stranding. It’s a game that has been favoring AMD hardware, on paper at least. But in my tests, the team red only managed to get a lead of 2 percent at 4K settings with 100 frames per second on average over 98 frames per second by team green.
Moreover, this game supports Nvidia DLSS, so you can gain even more frames per second just by turning the DLSS on.
At 1440p, the team red extends its lead to 5.5 percent with an average of 160 frames per second over 152 frames per second. By team green, the difference is respectable but not significant.
Now let’s have a look at Metro Exodus’ benchmarks. In this game, the 3080 commands an 8 percentage lead over the team red a 4K settings, which again shows that 6800 XT is not good enough to take down the 3080’s flagship status.
However, in this game, both architectures excel in different workloads and different areas. But the team green managed to maintain its lead with at least 2% in every scenario.
At 1440p settings, the 6800 XT pulls back a few points and becomes more competitive. It gives an average of 112 frames per second over 100 frames per second average of team green.
Ashes of The Singularity
Ashes of the Singularity is another game in which Nvidia takes the lead and gives 134 frames per second on average at 1440p settings over the 121 frames per second average of the team red.
Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5 also gave a lead to the team green as 3080 gave 157 frames per second on average at 1440p settings, and the 6800 XT gave 150 frames per second on average. The lead here is not huge, but it is still a win for Nvidia.
At 4K settings in the same game, AMD took the lead with 102 frames per second on average, while Nvidia could manage to produce 97 frames per second.
The Division 2
In The Division 2 at 1440p settings, both cards produced around 100 frames per second on average, so there was not a big difference.
Similarly, at 4K settings in The Division 2, the difference was again almost zero as both cards managed to give around 62 frames per second on average.
In Dirt 5, the red team took the lead and managed to give 77 frames per second on average compared to 70 average of the green team at 1440p settings.
The team red managed to maintain its lead in 4K as well by giving around 60 fps in comparison to 56 fps on Nvidia’s GPU.
Godfall gives surprising results in 1440p as the 6800 XT 100 fps on average, and the 3080 gave around 88 fps on average, which is an amazing win for the team red.
However, at 4K settings, AMD loses the lead and gives an equal performance as of 3080 by averaging around 60 frames per second.
Watch Dogs: Legion
Watch Dogs: Legion is the next game we are looking into, and both cards performed equally well by averaging 85 frames per second at 1440p settings.
However, at 4K settings, team green takes the lead by averaging at 55 frames per second compared to 49 frames per second on the AMD.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
The 6800 XT performs exceptionally well in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla by giving 90 frames per second compared to the 75 frames per second of the team green’s 3080.
However, the 3080 was able to catch up at 4K settings by giving equally good performance averaging at 56 frames per second.
Microsoft Flight Simulator
Both cards were able to perform equally well in Microsoft Flight Simulator by averaging around 50 fps at 1440p settings. But Nvidia destroys AMD at 4K settings as AMD only managed to produce 33 frames per second compared to 40 frames per second of team green.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, team red managed to produce 337 fps compared to the 327 fps on the team green at 1440p settings. However, at 4K, team green leads the charts again by producing 174 frames on average compared to the 168 frames on AMD’s GPU.
Both cards performed equally well in F1 2020 at 1440p settings by average at 195 frames per second. The difference was very little even at 4K settings, where the team green took the lead by producing 129 frames per second compared to the 124 frames per second on the AMD.
In Gears 5 at 1440p settings, AMD took the lead again with 111 fps on average, whereas the 3080 is also close with a 107 fps average. The 6800 Xt again slipped at 4K by producing 66 fps compared to the 77 fps on team green.
Horizon Zero Dawn
In Horizon Zero Dawn at 1440p, both cards performed equally well by producing 117 frames per second on average. The scenario was no different at 4K settings as AMD fell behind in performance by averaging 66 fps compared to the 73 fps on team green.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey results are quite different from what I saw in the newer Valhalla title. At 1440p, the 3080 is 5% faster than the 6800 XT by producing 84 fps compared to 80 fps on the AMD’s GPU.
Then I saw quite unexpectedly that the 6800 XT manages to overtake the 3080 at 4K setting by giving 5% faster performance averaging at 65 fps compared to 62 fps on team green.
World War Z
Next up, we have World War Z, and here the 6800 XT takes the lead again at 1440p settings by producing 207 fps compared to 190 fps on the 3080.
Surprisingly at 4K, the 6800 XT increased its lead by producing 134 fps compared to 118 fps on the team green. World War Z is a clear winning title for the team red.
Resident Evil 3
Testing with Resident Evil 3 shows the 6800 XT trailing the RTX 3080 by a 3 percent margin at 1440p. It produced 190 fps compared to the 196 fps on the team green side.
At 4K, the difference in performance becomes 6% from 3%. The team red produced 98 fps on average compared to 104 fps on the team green.
In Wolfenstein Youngblood, the 3080 produced 252 fps compared to 241 fps on the 6800 XT at 1440 settings. And at 4K settings, both cards produced 151 and 137 fps, respectively.
In Hitman 2, both cards performed equally well at 1440p with 125 fps on average. At 4K settings, though, the 6800 XT falls behind again and produced 81 fps compared to 88 fps on 3080.

RX 6800 XT vs RTX 3080: Budget & Price
Both cards come in the same price range with only a $50 difference. The official MSRP of the Nvidia Geforce GTX 3080 is $699, and AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is $649.
But this is when you get the cards for their retail price as it is very difficult to get your hands on any of these GPUs because of scalpers, but this issue will hopefully get resolved soon.
So if you have a budget of around $700, you can get either of these cards as there is not a huge difference. But you will have to wait for some time for the prices of these cards to get back to normal.

RX 6800 XT Vs RTX 3080: Features & Ray-Tracing Performance
Both RX 6800 XT and RTX 3080 come with some unique feature sets, which make both cards different from each other in different ways.
Like the new Smart Access Memory feature in the AMD’s card, which favors the performance of the Ryzen 5000 Series CPU, so if you have a Ryzen 5000 series CPU, this card will give you a slight performance boost. It has been already discussed above that how this feature works.
Rage Mode is another feature from AMD, which is basically a one-click overclocking to boost the performance of the card. AMD Infinity Cache is another amazing feature from the company which provides more bandwidth than a typical 256-bit card.
Now let’s talk about some unique features offered by the Nvidia Geforce card.
Geforce Experience makes sure that your drivers are always up to date. It also detects all the games installed on your PC and optimizes their settings for the best performance according to your GPU.

Now let’s talk about the ray tracing performance of both cards. Nvidia introduced ray tracing in its precious 2000 series for the first time, and the 3000 series is the 2nd series to feature it.
AMD introduced ray tracing for the first time in the 6000 series so let’s see the performance difference of ray tracing in both cards.
In Battlefield 5, the performance was not very different, both on the team green’s card and team red’s card. At 1880p with ray tracing on, the 1080 averaged at around 108 frames per second, and the 6800 XT averaged around 100 frames per second.
The case was the same when the resolution was increased to 1440p as the average fps were 79 and 84 on AMD and Nvidia, respectively.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the next game in my testing. The difference was huge in this game which showed the power of Nvidia ray tracing. On 3080, the game produced 92 fps on average at 1080p resolution, and the AMD was able to produce only 74 fps on average.
When the settings were increased to 1440p, the average fps was dropped to 63 fps on AMD and 70 fps on Nvidia, which is again a big difference.
In Control, Nvidia shattered the AMD’s card by a huge difference again. 115 were the average frames produced by Nvidia on 1080p settings, while AMD only managed to produce 75 frames per second.
The scenario was the same at 1440p settings where AMD produced 54 fps and Nvidia produced 80 fps on average, retaining its lead.
The next game is the Metro Exodus which supports ray tracing. The average fps on 1080p settings were 104 and 90 for Nvidia and AMD, respectively, which is again a big difference.
And at 1440p settings in Metro Exodus, the average fps on team red were 62 frames per second while team green managed to produce 80 frames per second.
Shadow of The Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider produced 90 fps on average at 1080p settings on 6800 XT, while the 3080’s average fps was 116 fps. Nvidia is clearly winning the ray tracing race in every game.
In the same game at 1440p settings, the gap narrowed a little as the average fps was 77 and 85 on AMD and Nvidia GPU, respectively.
Watch Dogs: Legion
Watch Dogs: Legion is the last game in the ray tracing testing today. At 1080p settings, Watch Dogs: Legion was able to produce 80 fps on Nvidia and only 60 fps on AMD. It was a little bit strange to see that a flagship card is hardly producing 60 fps on average.
When the settings were increased to 1440p, AMD could only produce 40 fps on average, and the Nvidia produced 60 fps.
Keeping all these ray tracing benchmarks in mind, the Nvidia RTX 3080 is the clear winner over the AMD RX 6800 XT. But this may be because this is the first generation of AMD’s ray tracing card, and AMD might improve ray tracing dramatically in their next generation of cards.
RX 6800 XT Vs. RTX 3080: Noise And Cooling
Both Nvidia and AMD improved their in-house designs with their latest series, and the results turned out to be really good, and both cards’ thermal and noise performance is much better than their previous founder’s edition cards.
AMD has a triple fan design, and at high-end gaming, the maximum temperature the card reaches is 75 degrees Celcius in an open case. And on auto mode, the fans spin at only 50% when the temperature is 75 degrees.
So you can speed up the fan with MSI afterburner and bring the temperature down even more.
As just mentioned above, the fans spin at only 50% when on auto mode, and the noise level is amazingly low. You’ll barely notice the noise of the spinning fans unless you put your attention to it.
Nvidia also changed the in-house design of their cards dramatically. The 3080 comes with 2 fans, and naturally, it has more noise than the 6800 XT.
However, the thermal performance is great on this card, as well as it also barely touches 75 degrees Celcius on full load.
However, because it has one less fan, the noise level is significantly higher than the AMD’s card, but it is not much to complain about.
The result is that noise level is not an issue in both cards, and you’ll be able to play your games on any of these cards without any disturbance.
RX 6800 XT Vs. RTX 3080: The Winner
It’s time to choose one of these two cards for almost the same budget.
Nvidia has some amazing features that make it a clear winner in most scenarios. First of all, AMD cannot even come close to the ray tracing performance of Nvidia.
As we’ve seen in the benchmarks above, the performance difference is even close to 30% in some games. That is just not acceptable when you are paying almost the same amount of money for both cards.
Moreover, Nvidia has DLSS 2.0 technology. DLSS is a mind-blowing technology that boosts the fps using Artificial Intelligence.
For example, if you are getting 100 fps in a game without DLSS, turning on DLSS could boost the fps to 150 fps or more. That is a significant increase and a much-needed feature in 2022.
