Power Supply For The Best RTX 2070

For power consumption and supply, I will be using the Founders Edition as the reference, power supply might change depending on the variant. A higher-end RTX 2070 might consume more power than the entry-level RTX 2070.

Fact: The RTX 2070 surprisingly consumes lower power during gaming than expectations. The Founders Edition consumes about 185 watts of power, while the standard RTX 2070 consumes around 175 watts.

Lower power consumption means less heat, less heat means fans will not have to spin at maximum RPM but a moderate speed. Moderate fan spinning will generate less noise. At the start of the article, I have mentioned the RTX 2070 consumes surprisingly less power and renders more frames per second than its predecessors.

image of corsair rm850x power supply

The official Nvidia website recommends a power supply of 550 watts for the full system as the card alone consumes 185 watts. The standard version consumes 175 watts.

The graphics card comes with 8-pin auxiliary connectors for the power supply. During the idle phase, the GPU consumes about 11.50 watts of power overall. These numbers during the idle state are better compared to other high-end Turing GPUs.

During gaming, the power consumption might differ slightly from game to game. If you want a rough idea, you can expect an average of about 185 watts in games.

Assuming the graphics card can draw up to 200 watts of power in the mightiest games that still leaves 300 watts if you are opt-in for a 500 watts power supply.

To be on the safe side, you can choose to go for 550 watts power supply as Nvidia and its AIB partners suggest.

For a lower watt power supply unit, like 450 watts, it will be able to run games just fine at 1080p. At 1440p, you might not achieve the targeted frame rate possible due to less power supply.

In short, If you have a 450-watt power supply you might want to change the PSU if RTX 2070 is your next upgrade.

Length And Width

Length and width are the approximate length of the longest side of the graphics card and the number of slots it has, respectively. Length is calculated in millimeters to meet the industry standard, and it’s important to round up the measurements to the close whole millimeter to avoid any confusion.

Different 2070 rtx cards

Width is typically calculated in PCI Express slots with 2-slot being the standard. On the other hand, a three-slot graphics card takes up an entire three slots or comes very much closer to 2.5 slots.

Clock Speeds

You can see the boost clock of every graphics card in the specifications. The factory overclock is commonly what differs retail graphics from each other. Some GPUs will have adequate room for more user-end overclocking.

Generally speaking, these graphics cards should perform almost the same – the higher factory OCs are being the most convenient feature for all those who don’t really feel like doing it themselves.

Ports And USB-C

HDMI and Display Port are the two most popular modern display standards. You can also find graphics cards that even boast a DVI connector that will surely make all those people satisfied who want to use an RTX 2070 and a DVI monitor.

Different ports of zotac graphics card

These are standard connectors and therefore shouldn’t surprise you much. If you are unable to understand the latest tech in PC hardware comprehensively, you might be somewhat confused about what a USB-C port is doing on a GPU. To make it more simple, these ports are for the new most VR headsets.

USB-C and a Virtual Link standard have been followed to make PC VR somewhat dull-witted to set up. Also, there is an occasional display that supports USB-C input. Although this is a relatively uncommon use of case and might not be held by every graphics card.

Form Factor

This is one of the most critical factors you should never overlook. Make sure you have an adequate room in your case for the graphics card. For this, check the length, height, and thickness of the GPU. Graphics cards are available in the single or dual slot, triple-slot, and half-height or slim versions.

Usually, most gaming-appropriate cards are full height and feature at least two expansion slots. Even if a graphics card technically takes up one or two slots in your case, it comes with a big heatsink and fan cover.

If you own a little Mini ITX motherboard, you should preferably consider a mini card, which is commonly 8 inches long or less. Though some graphics cards that carry this mark are longer. Make sure to check the specifications carefully.

Thermal Design Power

Thermal Design Power or TDP is an excellent measurement of heat dissipation. It gives you an approximate of how much watts are required to operate your graphics card at stock settings.

For instance, if you are operating a 400-watt power supply unit with an overclocked 95-watt CPU, you may want to opt for a high-end option. You will perhaps need a PSU upgrade.

Budget

Graphics cards are typically the most expensive component when it comes to PC building. Thanks to their long-lasting life, you don’t have to replace them more often. If you have not purchased a graphics card yet, it’s time to save some money and enjoy better value.

Above, I have reviewed the best RTX 2070 graphics cards you will want to consider from the price point. Even if you are tight on budget, you can still get a reliable graphics card without compromising on the performance and overall features.

Several types of gpus

Since PC building involves a variety of components that make up a lot of budgets, therefore, you should decide on a financial plan before making a purchase. When it comes to graphics cards, you can easily save some bucks and get GPU worth your money.

If you are investing a little more money, you are sure future-proofing your investment and doesn’t need to replace the graphics card more often in upcoming years. Spend Wisely!

Quick Tips For The Best RTX 2070

  1. Considering monitoring resolution is one of the foremost aspects to consider. Many mainstream graphics cards are adequate for gaming at 1080p resolution and 20-60 fps. Though for 4K resolution, you will need a high-end graphics card. This card will help you with high in-game settings, especially on the most demanding titles.
  2. You need to ensure where you have sufficient power and space. Make sure the case has adequate room for the graphics cards, and the power supply has sufficient watts to spare.
  3. Don’t forget to consider the refresh rate. If the monitor comes with triple-digit refresh rates, you will primarily require powerful graphics cards to reveal its full potential. As a substitute, if the monitor has 60Hz and 1080p, you may not want to pay extra money for the powerful card that drives quicker than the display.
  4. You should not get dual cards unless required. You should support the CrossFire setups and Multi-Card SLI that differs from one game to another. Try to get the most exceptional single card that you can easily afford.
  5. You should not rely on overclocking for some serious performance boost. If you are looking forward to enhanced performance, go for a powerful graphics card. GPUs commonly don’t have enormous amounts of overclocking headroom.
  6. Make sure to check the MSRP before buying. A smart way is to check the MSRP or launch date of the GPU before purchasing it.
  7. Lastly, save some bucks for the CPU. If you invest all the money on graphics and hold back on the processor, your system is more likely to score well on benchmarks but won’t perform well in real-gaming because of lower minimum frame rates.

My Final Verdict:

The RTX 2070 is exactly in the middle of 1080p and 4K i.e., QHD or 1440p display. It is perfect for 1440p 144Hz gaming as it has little to no issues in pumping 80-100 FPS at 1440p. If you are on a budget and cannot get the RTX 2080, then it is the perfect card for your choice.

The RTX 2070 Founders Edition is faster than the GTX 1080 in almost every game, sometimes beating the latter in two-digit percentages in performance at 1080p and 1440p.

The biggest concern of most people that consider the RTX 2070 is its price. Sure the graphics card is faster than the GTX 1080, but the card costs less than the suggested MSRP of the RTX 2070, and realistically, it will take a long time for the graphics card to reach its suggested MSRP values once again.

Right now, if you are stuck between different graphics cards, your budget will help you decide. If you can get your hands on RTX 2070 without overspending your allocated budget, go for it.

But, it is not worth the price as you can get a GTX 1080 for a less price tag and minute performance differences. Performance-wise, you can easily play games on a monitor with a 1440p and 144Hz or more refresh rate.
