Lifted this question from here.

Journey will be a popular answer, I think.

The single-player campaign for Battlefield 3 surprised me. I didn't expect the various twists (  like the nuke going off in a different city and the death of Quinton Cole at the hand of Blackburn ).

First thing that comes to mind was Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. It was nice to play a vibrant RPG with a decent story. It coming out around the same time Skyrim did made it less desirable. Sad that the studio went under, would have loved a sequel.

Skyrim and Deus Ex HR.

Both from the fact that I banked hard on them being massive flops, and in the  fact that you can save Malik, which is amazing.

Sleeping dogs on the pc. I never heard of this game until it was realised, and was surprised to see how great the lighting was in the game and how smotth everything felt. Ohh and the fighting mechanic seemed really well done, better the GTA imho.

Guild Wars 2. I wasn't following it very much until I played the beta. Many great things about that game, but what surprised me was actually getting attached to the characters in the story. That was a bit of a shocker to me.

Definitely Sleeping Dogs PC. Never heard of it before it was released and its pretty fantastic and very cool if you can play it in 3D adds a bit more.

Probably Minecraft.

It is a really ugly game and everything I do in it seems so irrelevant and complicated.... yet I still play it. I'm surprised by this.

Yeah, Sleeping Dogs is a good one. Especially if you consider all the bull**** behind the scenes with it being part of the true crime series which sucked, then being sold off to SE.

The original Crysis impressed me like no other. It was freakin beautiful, and the precision and realism of player control is something that is matched by no game, including Crysis 2. I can't put my finger on it, but Crysis feels better than anything else. Basically because of Crysis, I have upgraded to a GTX 280, GTX 580, and GTX 680.

Mass Effect. I'm currently playing the first Mass Effect on the PC and besides getting lost in the big space ship city, its actually a really good game and has great graphics for 2008.

Spec Ops: The Line. Otherwise being a totally braindead third person cover-based shooter I didn't want to touch, its little mindfook story surprised me.

As for not released yet, Crysis 3 with its well-crafted trailers continue to surprise me, catering to the flashy presentation and graphics whore parts of me, although the gameplay will quite probably be as braindead as in the second. What remains is to get my hands on a decent graphics card once again.
